I find it to be an amazingly good and uplifting escapist flick. From watching the making of Xanadu, it was fascinating how the people producing it all of a sudden got settled with Gene Kelly. What a great choice that was. And then they got settled with ELO. And then they decided they better do roller disco. It is almost like they’re making this thing on the fly and sometimes it feels like it. But it’s a feel good movie in a way because it’s about you know believing in yourself and believing in the power of true love. In a way, it has a little bit of a princess bride vibe to it for me, although I’m sure others would disagree. But Jeff Lynn’s music? Just spectacular. So to summarize, Gene Kelly, Jeff Lynne, an old Ford Woody station wagon with a surfboard, and maybe the greatest treat of all. The pan Pacific auditorium in Los Angeles, which has since burned down. There’s just so many little pieces in this movie to love, I can look past the unusual choice for lead actor. And I can look past the somewhat clunky storyline.
