You get so hooked that you actually want to pause it, just so it doesn’t finish too quickly! Sharon Horgan is an absolute genius and makes the whole thing even more brilliant. Particularly the show's reliance on the "youth envy" narrative. Women in their 50s are not desperate to cling to their younger years and resentful of younger women. In reality, many women in their 50s experience a profound sense of freedom rather than insecurity. The scene where her friend calls young bartenders "prostitutes" feel fabricated for TV drama rather than representative of how real women talk or behave. 29’en don’t do that. MEN do. The family dynamics are difficult to buy into. The protagonist's son is insufferable, but his behavior ultimately reflects his mother's own flaws (what kind of woman raises and celebrates such an inconsiderate, unkind, awful young man? Maybe the type of woman that calls female bartenders prostitutes?) Youth is a cleverly written show that manages to explore the pathos of getting older while still wanting to be seen, desired, and sexually viable. It’s funny, honest, poignant, and somehow manages to make aging feel sexy again. I think this may be my new Sex and the City, and I don’t say that lightly.
