But the lack of support from pharmaceutical companies and government bureaucracy have kept the procedure off the market for yeqrs despite its proven efficacy. The film powerfully reveals how government bureaucracy and capitalism stifle a product that could free women from the responsibility of birth control and save the lives. What makes the story particularly compelling is that it doesn’t paint the pharmaceutical industry as the only villain. The researchers themselves struggle with the realities of commercialization and aren’t necessarily equipped to turn a scientific breakthrough into a viable product. On the other side, the commercial promoters understand the market and the importance of adoption, but run headfirst into deeply rooted social attitudes around male contraception. And that’s where the film becomes much bigger than its premise. It’s provocative without being afraid to be uncomfortable, and it uses an unconventional subject to expose some very conventional assumptions about gender, money, innovation, and masculinity. What stayed with me most was not only the significance of his scientific work, but also his extraordinary persistence in the face of years of institutional, commercial, and social resistance. Vaishali Sinha handles the subject with sensitivity, warmth, and gentle humor. She makes a complex scientific and social issue accessible without oversimplifying it, while allowing the people at the heart of the story to remain fully human. The film also raises a compelling and long-overdue question: why has the responsibility for contraception continued to fall so disproportionately on women? Thought-provoking, moving, and surprisingly entertaining, Give It a Shot is ultimately a story about scientific imagination, perseverance, and the possibility of a more equal approach to reproductive responsibility.
