Battle Force (2012) Paul Chambers Apparently someone got inspired by Quentin Tarentino's recent film about American soldiers hunting Nazis during World War II. "Inglourious Basterds" makes "Battle Force" look like a high school acting project.

Ted (2012) Paul Chambers Sorry, but I could bearly stomach Ted. Give me a good gross-out comedy any old day, but this one ain't funny.

B
Barbarella (1968) Paul Chambers "Barbarella" is the 1968 sci-fi that made Jane Fonda a household name. The opening credits feature a striptease that takes Fonda from a cumbersome space suit to her birthday suit. Her sex kitten looks were enough to drive young men crazy.

Safe (2012) Paul Chambers The usually stone-faced Statham actually emotes a bit here and there. You kinda get a nice warm vibe right before he kills about 20 to 30 people. Then, repeat.

B-
The Raven (2012) Paul Chambers For mystery lovers, there isn't much to do except watch the story play out. A distinct shortage of suspects could mean guessing the killer's identity won't be much of a challenge for fans of the genre.

C-
The Innkeepers (2011) Paul Chambers Sara Paxton is so photogenic and her acting is so nice that I wish there was more for her to do. Instead she just wonders about the near-empty hotel, reacting to cheap scares. Ho hum!

D
Night Wolf (2012) Paul Chambers The creature effects are a joke. Everything is kept quite dark and the gore is a bore. Every once in a while, we'd like to see what's actually happening.

C-
The Scarlet Worm (2011) Paul Chambers As far as I'm concerned, there aren't enough westerns being made these days. Even low-budget entries are welcome, but unfortunately "The Scarlet Worm" doesn't make a good case for a revival of the genre.

F
The Wicker Tree (2010) Paul Chambers This horror dud features some of the worst acting since you saw that community theater production of "Lil Abner." I saw you there, don't deny it.

F
Dark Tide (2012) Paul Chambers Here's hoping Berry had a great time filming this action thriller near Capetown. Because this shark story has no bite.
Posted May 19, 2012Edit critic review
C
Let the Bullets Fly (2010) Paul Chambers Fans of the genre may enjoy the bizarre humor. But, the story seemed never-ending to me.

Episode 50 (2011) Paul Chambers "Episode 50″ moves along at a nice clip with a better-than-average setup story. It fails however to keep up its dramatic grip as the story's collective IQ drops lower than the temperature of those cold spots dotting the hospital hallways.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) Paul Chambers All the gizmos and technology on display in M:I 4 are probably impossible based on current science. But, wow, do you ever get the feeling that this neat stuff is very doable at some point in the future? I sure do.

C+
Brake (2012) Paul Chambers Over 95% of "Brake" takes place in the trunk of a car. But, despite the confines or perhaps because of them, it's a decent enough thriller.

D+
Detention (2011) Paul Chambers The story makes little sense, but the rapid-fire jokes are amusing at times. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss. Just keep plugging away and the audience may laugh a time or two.

A-
The Cabin in the Woods (2011) Paul Chambers What's not to like? Horror fans with a brain will dig the clever script. The gore is there along with a true sense of concern for the victims. If only all horror films could be like "The Cabin in the Woods."
Posted May 06, 2012Edit critic review
C-
The Three Stooges (2012) Paul Chambers Excellent casting. Poor writing. Poor execution. That's the unfortunate truth about "The Three Stooges."
Posted May 06, 2012Edit critic review
C+
Lockout (2012) Paul Chambers Yes, it's a guilty pleasure. And, I really don't think there's anything original about "Lockout." But, Guy Pearce is a very decent action hero and there's plenty happening in this outer space adventure.
Posted Apr 19, 2012Edit critic review
C-
The Darkest Hour (2011) Paul Chambers Once again it's time for the end of the world. But, "The Darkest Hour" fails to see the light and we're stuck with yet another mediocre sci-fi movie.
Posted Apr 18, 2012Edit critic review
F
The Terror Experiment (2010) Paul Chambers C. Thomas Howell, Judd Nelson and Robert Carradine star in this sub-par zombie attack with special effects that are jaw-droppingly bad. Seriously, a high school senior with a good make-up kit could do a better job.

(undefined) Paul Chambers One exchange between Stryker and the unnamed cult leader is priceless...in a cheesy, low-budget kind of way. It comes at the end of the movie, but let's face it...you may ditch the film before getting to the final scene.

A-
The Raid: Redemption (2011) Paul Chambers The action is fresh and intensely interesting. Indeed, future martial arts flicks will be judged and compared to the style and quality of "The Raid: Redemption." It's that good.

C+
American Reunion (2012) Paul Chambers "American Reunion" is full of scuzzy humor and improbable encounters, but you got to love it. The story is reasonably well written. It's the characters that we come back to see. They're predictable and we like it that way.

C-
Wrath of the Titans (2012) Paul Chambers Monsters alone a movie does not make. Give me story, ye gods of old. Less Titans and more time with a better screenplay.
Posted Apr 14, 2012Edit critic review
C-
The Hunger Games (2012) Paul Chambers What works on the page may not translate to the screen. That's always been the challenge of bringing a writer's vision to the movies. It all comes back to "suspension of disbelief."

B+
21 Jump Street (2012) Paul Chambers Yes, some of the movie's funny bits were in the trailer. After all, they were trying to get you to buy a ticket. But, this is one of the rare comedies that delivers even more than promised.

A Lonely Place to Die (2011) Paul Chambers Despite the many faults with the story (particularly the logic), there's good action and the film moves well once it gets started. Lots of running, climbing and dodging bullets. You could do worse.

C-
The Viral Factor (2012) Paul Chambers If action is all you seek, then I recommend that you watch the movie in 30-minute segments. Start, then stop when you get tired. Then, start again. It might be more palatable that way.
Posted Apr 07, 2012Edit critic review
F
Silent House (2011) Paul Chambers "Silent House" just isn't scary. The only reason to keep watching is to see if they screw up the tracking shot, and leave the boo boo in without stopping. Ultimately I was bored and didn't really care after the first 15 minutes.

F
Splintered (2010) Paul Chambers When you finally learn what it's all about, you might have preferred a community theater production of "Annie" instead. "Splintered" is lame to the max.

B-
John Carter (2012) Paul Chambers The film is far from perfect. Sometimes it's silly. But, the action and the atmosphere make this a world worth exploring. Paul Chambers, CNN.

C-
Act of Valor (2012) Paul Chambers On the positive side, many of the explosions and stunts are technical marvels. If the scenes had been more tightly and coherently written, at least action fans would have something to crow about. As it stands, "Act of Valor," is a failed mission.

D+
Gone (2012) Paul Chambers The ending, which will not be discussed here, is jaw-droppingly stupid. "Gone" is a slow-moving thriller that doesn't make sense. Paul Chambers, CNN.

D
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) Paul Chambers "Ghost Rider" is coming to suck out your soul. Or, at least $14 from your wallet. Paul Chambers, CNN.

C
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) Paul Chambers Darth Maul is back, this time waving his wand in 3D. "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" was poorly received by critics when it debuted, so does it fare any better with its new up-conversion? Not really.

Safe House (2012) Paul Chambers Director Daniel Espinosa shows his fondness for Tony Scott's shaky-cam tint-o-rama method of directing. Choppy editing, a shaky camera and darkened daytime scenes are annoying, especially when combined with a weak script and predictable characters.

A-
Chronicle (2012) Paul Chambers "Chronicle" is the kind of science fiction that fans of the genre crave. Despite the limitations of the POV format, it rocks. I want more! Paul Chambers, CNN.

B-
Kill List (2011) Paul Chambers "Kill List" starts as an excruciatingly slow family drama. Many action mavens might fold before the second act, and that would be a shame. Hang tight, and enjoy the strange, compelling turn-of-events that follow. Paul Chambers, CNN.

B+
The Woman in Black (2012) Paul Chambers Radcliffe plays an adult quite convincingly. Kipps is a character you care about. And, the story is about as spooky as it gets. Paul Chambers, CNN.

D+
In Time (2011) Paul Chambers Nothing remarkable about this futuristic adventure that reminds me a bit of "Logan's Run." Paul Chambers, CNN.
Posted Feb 09, 2012Edit critic review
C
The Double (2011) Paul Chambers Gere phones in a cool, detached performance. Grace is sub-par as the whiz kid agent. And, the story, despite numerous plot twists, fails to entertain. Grade: C.
Posted Feb 08, 2012Edit critic review
B-
The Thing (2011) Paul Chambers "The Thing" is not half as good as the Carpenter film, but it has enough shocks and scares to keep you interested. And, if you see it first, then at least you have the back story for viewing the 1982 classic. Gore is good. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Texas Killing Fields (2011) Paul Chambers "Texas Killing Fields" is nothing more than an average crime thriller with some better-than-average suspense. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Punished (2011) Paul Chambers "Punished" is a gripping thriller. Well-directed. Well-acted. And, a great story to boot. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Man on a Ledge (2012) Paul Chambers "Man on a Ledge" goes splat! What else can you say about it? Paul Chambers, CNN.

The Grey (2012) Paul Chambers "The Grey" offers amazing action scenes and an intelligent story. Put this flick on your must-see list. Paul Chambers, CNN.

C-
Underworld: Awakening (2012) Paul Chambers Kate Beckinsale looks great and she certainly can "off" werewolves like nobody's business. But, the "Underworld" films are all pretty much alike, lots of action with a throwaway story. "Awakening" is no different. Paul Chambers, CNN.

Haywire (2011) Paul Chambers Wow, what a movie! "Haywire" is a terrific action-packed adventure. Paul Chambers, CNN.

C-
The Divide (2011) Paul Chambers While I can't recommend, "The Divide" is a film that could offer some brief moments for lovers of the horror/sci-fi genre. Gens show some talent, and I'm sure he'll have further opportunities to express himself. Paul Chambers, CNN.
Posted Jan 15, 2012Edit critic review
C-
Contraband (2012) Paul Chambers A convoluted plot and the wasting of some decent actors, including an out-of-place Kate Beckinsale, makes "Contraband" just so much lost cargo. Paul Chambers, CNN.
